What is Athletic Training?

Athletic training encompasses the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of emergent, acute or chronic injuries and medical conditions. Athletic training is recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA), Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as an allied health care profession. Pre-Athletic Training Program

  • Complete a BS/BA degree at UMBC in addition to completing necessary prerequisites (~4 years)
  • Documentation of 50 observation hours under the direct supervision of a Board certified and state credentialed athletic trainer
  • Apply to accredited Athletic Training programs
  • Complete Athletic Training degree (~2 years)
  • Pass board exam
  • Begin working as an Athletic Trainer

Job Outlook

Employment of athletic trainers is projected to grow 17 percent from 2021 to 2031, much faster than the average for all occupations.

About 2,500 openings for athletic trainers are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire. The median annual wage for athletic trainers was $48,420 in May 2021. (bls.gov)
