Advising
Students who are interested in pursuing Pre-Nursing should indicate Pre-Nursing as their area of interest on the Declaration of Major form. Entering PNUR as your Declared Major will allow Pre-Nursing to be officially listed as your subplan in myUMBC. Declared students will then be assigned an advisor from our office. All students must meet with their advisor before Fall and Spring registration. Students who are also pursuing a major at UMBC should first plan to meet with their major advisor, and then consult their Pre-Nursing advisor. Students who are part of the UMSON/UMBC Partnership Pathways must meet with Ms. Kelly Simer or Ms. Ericka Thompson. Interested Pre-Nursing students may make an appointment with Ms. Simer at https://calendly.com/kstrai2
We have provided a list of common prerequisites necessary for admission to nursing schools. It is important to note that this list is not inclusive of all nursing schools. We highly recommend that students research possible nursing schools early and often to ensure that you are completing coursework for all potential schools.
Please note that this list refers to common courses required for the BSN degree programs. Those courses in bold correspond to pre-reqs commonly required for those students pursuing Entry to Practice MSN or second degree BSN programs.

Students who are planning to major in STEM-related programs may be required to take higher levels of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Statistics as part of their major. Students should consult with individual nursing programs to determine if those courses will satisfy prerequisites for nursing school as well.
Additional Electives to Consider (These courses are not required for nursing school or count as pre-reqs, but are often helpful in learning about the healthcare profession and help students round out their schedules. Always consult with your Academic Advisor before choosing specific courses for pre-reqs).
